JUDO GOSHIN JUTSU NO KATA NOTES |
(Formas de Autodefensa -
Cinco Secciones - 21 técnicas) |
(Forms of Self Defense -
Five Sections - 21 techniques) |
dulzura o rendirse.

This kata was created in 1956 and shows
the influence of Professor Kenji Tomiki, one of Professor Kano's
students, who also studied Aikido under the founder of Aikido. It
consists of 21 techniques against an unarmed as well as armed attacker.
The first 7 techniques are against an attack close in. The next
five are against attacks from strikes and kicks. Then there are
three attacks with a knife, three with a stick and three with a gun.
The techniques here cannot be used in free exercise practice or in
competition, but only in kata. Never-the-less, as one practices
this kata, the attack speed increases and one's reflexes and reactions
sharpen to meet the attack. Eventually, this kata can be practiced
with real weapons. The intent in this kata is different than with
normal judo practice, in that this is a self-defense kata, the intent on
the part of both participants is to hurt the other. While the
actions are controlled, so that the attacker is not hurt, the defender's
actions can easily be modified to disable the attacker. It is
important to realize that all of the techniques in this kata are
consistent with the principles of 'Judo', The way of gentleness or
yielding.

Section 1 - Unarmed Close-in Attacks By Holding
|
1 Ryote Dori - Two Hand Hold
Attacker grabs both wrists and attempts a knee kick to the groin. Defender
avoids the kick, forces his right hand against attacker's weak thumb,
releasing the grip, continues his motion into a backfist strike to the
temple and ends with an armlock and wrist lock forcing the attacker to
submit or have his arm broken.
|
 |
 |
2 Hidari Eri Dori - Left Lapel Hold
Attacker grabs left lapel and pushes defender back. Defender holds
attacker's hand as he steps back, pulling attacker off balance and strikes
attacker with the back of his hand. He ends the attack by forcing the
attacker to the ground with a wrist and elbow joint lock.
|
3 Migi Eri Dori - Right Lapel Hold
As attacker grabs across to the right lapel and pulls defender forward,
defender steps forward and delivers a right uppercut to the chin of the
attacker. He then holds the wrist and turns forcing the attacker to be
thrown.
|
 |
 |
4 Kata Ude Dori - Single Hand Hold
Attacker grabs the arm lifting defender to his toes and attempts to take
defender with him. As they walk, defender delivers a kick to the knee and
uses the unbalance position of the defender to apply the arm lock forcing
submission.
|
5 Ushiro Eri Dori - Back Collar Hold
Attacker grabs collar from behind. Defender turns and blocks arm with one
arm and delivers a punch to the solar plexus with the turning motion and
then applies the arm lock, forcing attacker's arm down against defender's
shoulder. Note that this is an application of a competition and free
exercise practice technique.
|
 |
 |
6 Ushiro Jime - Rear Choke
Defender ducks under choke as soon as he feels it being applied forcing
attacker's arm into the arm lock.
|
7 Kakae Dori - Rear Seizure
Attacker grasps body and arms from behind as in a bear hug. Defender
counters by raising shoulders and arms and simultaneously stomping on
attacker's foot with a forceful downward kick. This causes attacker to
release grip. Defender then turns, holding attacker's arm and wrist into a
forceful throw.
|
 |
Section 2 - Unarmed Attacks At A Distance
|
 |
8 Naname Uchi - Slanting Strike
Attacker attempts to strike the left side of head. Strike is parried and
countered with an uppercut and throat grab forcing a take down or throw to
the attacker's rear.
|
9 Ago Tsuki - Uppercut
Attacker attempts an uppercut that is parried by defender. Attacker's arm
motion is redirected against his elbow and turned into a throw by this
action.
|
 |
 |
10 Gammen-Tsuki - Thrust Punch or Jab
Attack is again parried and a counter attack is made by a punch to
attacker's floating ribs. Defender then applies a rear choke forcing
submission or unconsciousness.
|
11 Mae Geri - Front Kick
Defender parries kick by turning body and hooking leg with arm. He then
grabs the foot of attacker's raised leg with both hands, twisting the ankle,
breaking it, and then forcing attacker backward and down.
|
 |
 |
12 Yoko Geri - Side Kick
Attacker attempts a side kick as he passes defender, who parries the kick
turns and pulls attacker down onto his back. While this technique in the
kata looks harmless enough, in actuality, the defender would leave his knee
in place so that defender falls onto him with his lower back on the knee,
which wouid no doubt break the attacker's back.
|
Section 3 - Armed Attacks - Knife
|
13 Tsukkake - Close In Thrust
As attacker turns his body and attempts to withdraw knife, which is hidden
from defender's view, defender steps in, blocks the elbow, blinds attacker
with a slap to the eyes. Attacker is taken down by application of pressure
to the elbow.
|
 |
 |
14 Choku Zuki - Straight Thrust
Attacker attempts a lunge with the knife, which is parried and at the same
time a strike above the nose. Defender turns and applies an arm lock to the
arm with the knife, forcing submission or a broken elbow.
|
15 Naname Zuki - Slanting Stab
Attacker attempts a downward stab to the chest. Defender parries and
controls wrist and arm up into a throw or take-down. He then locks the arm
and takes the knife away and holds it against attacker's throat. Variations
of this technique, force attacker to cut his own throat while being thrown.
|
 |
Section 4 - Armed Attacks - Stick
|
 |
16 Furiage - Upswing Against A Stick
At attacker brings the stick up to strike, defender steps in, blocking the
attacking arm, delivering a palm strike to the chin and throwing attacker
backward.
|
17 Furioroshi - Downswing Against A Stick
Attacker attempts to strike left side of defender's head. Stick is avoided
by a turning action. Defender immediately steps in with a back fist strike
to the bridge of the nose. He then controls the stick, and strikes again
below the nose with the edges of his hand forcing the attacker down.
|
 |
 |
18 Morote Zuke - Two Hand Thrust
Attacker thrusts stick to abdomen. Defender turns and parries. He then grabs
the stick and pulls attacker forward and steps in to grab stick with both
hands. Attacker not wanting to let go of the stick, pulls back and defender
steps forward throwing attacker with his own stick.
|
Section 5 - Armed Attacks - Gun
|
19 Shomen zuke - pistol held to abdomen
Attacker holds gun against abdomen and searches for wallet with other hand.
Defender, watching attacker's eyes, at the key moment, turns and forces gun
to side and with the action of the other hand forces gun up into attackers
armpit and a release of the weapon. Defender then strikes attacker with
weapon.
|
 |
 |
20 Koshi gamae - pistol at side
Pistol is held away from defender towards the side. As attacker reaches for
wallet and looks away, defender turns, forces gun to point away, and with
the aid of the other hand, forces gun up and pulls. Attacker's finger is
locked into the trigger guard and is broken off. Defender ends the attack
with an upward strike to the chin of the attacker with the gun.
|
21 Haimen zuke - pistol against the back
As gun is placed against the back, defender glances to see what arm is
raised. As attacker reaches for wallet, defender turns and locks arm, grasps
gun with other hand disarming attacker as he is thrown down.
